ERC20 vs TRC20 Address Format: How to Identify Each Network

One of the most practical differences between ERC20 and TRC20 is the format of their wallet addresses. Knowing how to identify each address type can prevent costly mistakes when sending tokens.

ERC20 Address Format (Ethereum)

All Ethereum addresses — and therefore all ERC20 token addresses — begin with "0x" followed by 40 hexadecimal characters. For example: 0xbd7e4a0e4e5d9ab1c2f3a8b7c6d5e4f3a2b1c0d9. These addresses are the same across all ERC20 tokens, meaning your MetaMask address works for ETH, USDT-ERC20, USDC, and any other Ethereum-based token simultaneously.

Quick Identification

ERC20 address: starts with "0x" — example: 0x1a2b3c... • TRC20 address: starts with "T" — example: TXyz123... Always match the format before sending.

TRC20 Address Format (TRON)

TRON network addresses always begin with the letter "T" followed by 33 alphanumeric characters in Base58 encoding. For example: TXyz1a2b3c4d5e6f7g8h9i0j1k2l3m4n5. Just like Ethereum, your TRON address works for TRX, USDT-TRC20, and all other TRC20 tokens on the same address.

Why This Matters: Avoid Permanent Loss

Sending TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address (or vice versa) is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in crypto. The tokens are sent to a valid-looking address on the wrong blockchain. Since the networks are separate and incompatible, the funds become inaccessible and are effectively lost forever. No exchange, no recovery service, and no blockchain support team can retrieve these funds. Always verify the address format matches the selected network before confirming.

Practical Verification Checklist

Before every transfer, ask yourself: Does the destination address start with "0x" (ERC20/Ethereum) or "T" (TRC20/TRON)? Have I selected the matching network on the sending platform? If sending from an exchange, have I confirmed the withdrawal network matches the deposit address network? When in doubt, always send a small test transaction first and wait for confirmation before sending the full amount.
